Lego 10242 – Mini Cooper – Bag One build

Well, this is one model I have been looking forward to building – and thus so the build commences.

One of the main reasons I bought this model is that I could see potential for customisation.

I know that there are a lot of reviewers that take the bags out, photograph them, review the parts, etc – but regular readers know I just get straight into it – so why waste any more time.

The parts below make up the first stage of the build. What they provide is a great platform for the basis of the car, and instantly you can see where the model can be turned from a MkVII to say a Mark II.

What I am going to do is build the car out and then have a good look at what we have got as stock. You can see from the rear of the car that the fog light can be very easily removed and that the exhaust can be centralised – so that would be more in line with a MkII Cooper – of course the colour would need to be silver.

I think that there also needs to be a lot of engineering going on if you want some front and rear suspension happening here. Within the confines of the model I think that the some smart thinking needs to be going on. It may be possible, and perhaps the parts from the Technic Unimog will come in useful. Let’s see – not a great priority TBH, but a nice to have.

I am not that impressed with the gear stick – I think it looks a little clunky for my liking. So I have quickly experimented with another part and it looks a ton better. Not photographed here, but a definite change is needed which makes it look a lot sharper.

Dinky little rear wheel section – quite like that, but can the space be better used for some rear suspension workings……which may well encroach the boot space as well?

The bumpers are the trickiest parts that need to be manipulated – I am not really a fan of the single layer and would like to see some over-riders be added – once again, that is going to require a bit of thought and may not even be possible due to the constraints of the model size, parts and width – but let’s give it a crack once the builds is complete.

This is quite an easy build BTW- I finished it in less than an hour and it is not at all complex.

Bag two coming up shortly – but so far, so good.
