That’s a bit better – Hammers 2, Toon Army 0

It was not a classy game, it was not a beautiful game. But going on the back of that excellent result at Anfield came the Dimi Payet Show.

You have to wonder how we snagged one of the best midfielders in Europe – a snip at £11m when the likes of Depay et all are in the £25m bracket.

The early goal settled the nerves and the second added stability. Payet was all at it. Running, creating, showboating, it was a great performance and even at this early stage of the season he has to be a contender for Player of the Season.

I thought Victor Moses did well yesterday – he worked hard and created the opp for Payet’s second – he was unlucky that his shot came crashing off the bar.

One thing was interesting that Jonathan Pearce mentioned on 5Live – why has Moses had so many loan clubs? Surely he would be better than what the current Chelsea crop are producing……….

Fair play to the other players – it was great to see

1) A clean sheet – Adrian comes back into goal for the game against City, so well done Randolph.

2) No bookings – makes a real change from the nastiness of red cards that were picked up over the last few weeks.

3) Defenders getting back en mass to stifle any chance that Newcastle had – a bit nervy at times, but we got there.

I was also pleased to see Carroll back as well – Methinks Bilic has done well not to rush him back and ensure he is fighting fit. We now are slowly getting a range of striking options that will help us get those important goals.

What is now crucial is that we take the same attitude to City on Sat evening that we did against Liverpool and Arsenal – City should be respected but not feared. Palace gave them a tough time this weekend.

Up to 5th at the moment and that is a good spot. Above big hitters like Chelsea, Liverpool and the Spuds. Long may this continue.

And has Bilic’s gamble with the Europa League paid off? Seems like it.
