Well, that was a bloody struggle. Actually, it was more like a waste of time.
1-0 down in 9 mins, and Southampton down to 10 on 54, with Wanyama getting a red for a silly challenge on Payet.
But with the advantage of the extra man, we could not make it count.
I am hoping that this was just an off day at the office. We were hopeless. For the goal, the defence was all over the shop and not a challenge made on any player closing in, hence Yoshida getting the solitary goal.
But with all the huff and puff, the sole figure of Valencia did not receive a decent service from the flanks. Payet and Noble were quiet, and were average at best. A far cry from the midweek triumph over 10 man Aston Villa. Even with substitutes of Carroll and new loan signing Emenike coming on to try and give Valencia some support – who was yet another player having an off day. Forster was on top form saving a point blank header in from Winston Reid and did a lot to prevent us from scoring.
There weren’t any real positives to be taken from the game at all. Everyone played OK, but against ten men, this game was there for the taking and thus a look at fifth place was in with a shout.
It is annoying that we lost this one and I do find it difficult to muse about as there is not much consolation. Actually there is – Charlie Austin fluffing his lines towards the end of the match………….quite happy with that.
The FA Cup replay is on Tuesday………..how much of a distraction will a cup run be this season? And how many of us are looking to get knocked out so that we can focus on the league??
A frustrating day at the office.
