Something is not going right at West Ham at the moment.
Whilst the change from Upton Park to the London Stadium has been relatively successful, there have been reports that some of our fans have decided to have a row with each other in the stands………..complete and utter madness. Which is what West Ham’s season could be called to date.
For this game, I was at a Family Day at the Mrs’ place of work. I had a bloody good time there, when normally I would be “watching” the match live. I am so glad that I didn’t.
On paper, we should have walloped Watford – they have not had the best of starts this season, and the Hammers capitalised on this with yet another Antonio headed goal.
Then we have a wonderful bit of skill by Payet for the second Antonio goal. A “rabona” from inside the box, started with a lovely cross field ball by Masuaku and up in there is Antonio – doing what our strikers can’t seem to do at all!
2-0 up and you would think that the Hammers would look to shore up at the back and ensure that the three points are taken home. I was very excited when I saw the scores on the BBC Sport app on the mobile.
However from that point on the Hammers collapsed – Collins being a contributor to the first two Watford goals and Adrian – normally great between the sticks – was not on his best letting in two more, the fourth goal leaked in when could have easily been a save. The defence had gone completely AWOL and with the score level at 2-2, it seemed to have stunned us into doing nothing great in particular. Just no cohesion or fight for each other at the moment and this has dragged us to, what can be called unfamiliar territory of the bottom of the table.
I only saw a brief glimpse of Zaza, but not enough to make an informed decision about if he is going to be a good loan signing. Payet produced a moment of brilliance but faded at bit towards the end. Antonio continues to produce excellent form. The rest?
I will not lie – I am alarmed at our form. I knew that there would be a hangover from the excellent season just gone, but this is pretty bad at the moment. I am not calling for Slav’s head – that is just plain bloody stupid, BUT, the players need to perform and they are not doing so at the moment. A suggestion might be to drop Adrian and see what Randolph can do – no good resting on your laurels and expecting that there is no challenge to the goalkeeping spot. I am also hoping that Cresswell gets back ASAP as well as Andy Carroll – if Antonio is scoring headers, just think what Carroll could do with decent service from the flanks.
Worrying times at the moment and I am sure that the team are getting used to the size of the pitch, etc at the London Stadium. However this is West Ham and we should be playing like a team befitting the 57k capacity. At the moment, it seems like playing for a few fans on Hackney Marshes.
