Before I start, I want tell you about the way West Ham tout a game.
With over 50,000 ST holders, this game is a sell out. However, thanks to the annoying TV rights and Sky Sports, the game was moved to a Monday at 8pm. Which meant that there were quite a few ST’s who could not make the game, me included. Looking at the pricing, the cheapest ticket was £51……..surely they may have made a concession to drop the price a tad to really ensure that those who could watch it, got the chance at a good price?
I’ll be honest – I had half an eye on the game – a load of IKEA shelves needed to be built, and knowing that this was going to be a tough one, I had Sky Sports in the background.
A lot has been said on social media about the effort that Mark Noble puts in and how Fonte had a shocker, Snodgrass being a bit of a liability. I want to focus on the fact that we enjoyed a lot of possession and for periods we looked like we matched Chelsea. But they are league leaders for a reason and on 25 mins, the counter attack by Chelsea saw Hazard latch on a through ball and score past Randolph which went pretty much against the state of play.
On the front line on 40 mins with Costa being guilty of a glaring miss, but also at the same time the Hammers defence earning their wages by keeping out the Chelsea attack.
I was worried about Carroll injuring himself again, and he did take a bad knock on head early in the first half, but he didn’t really get a good level of service to properly worry the Chelsea defence.
The second goal that we conceded was somewhat soft, but that is what champions are made of and Costa can be unplayable at times. 2-0 at home, but still we pressed forward. I will say this – Kouyate is looking a little unsteady with the volume of cards he is getting of late, so I hope that this is just a blip.
I had almost completed by IKEA building, the battery on the drill was almost empty but then a lovely hit by Lanzini gives a glimmer of hope with injury time to go. He really has stepped up since the leaving of “that player” and deserved his goal.
In the end, it was a fair result – but we should take heart that we didn’t do a Man City and let’s face it, who would want to be an Arsenal fan at the moment.
Bournemouth away next – I can see a possible banana skin here………
